A Collection of Essays on the Collection of 
Hitchhiker Inscriptions

UNDER PERPETUAL CONSTRUCTION

     Over the course of that last few decades, I have been compelled to write on the experiences I have had while collecting hitchhiker messages around North America, on the research I have done on the messages left, and the connections I have made in this process.

     The essays that follow begin with the run-up to and the account of the very first hitchhiking ride I flagged down, which was in eastern Arizona in 1974; the germ from which has sprouted this tangential journey for which this website is devoted. 

     Many of these essays are posted, but some are in editing and others are yet to be drafted. And, since I continue to search for these thumber messages, the journey continues...
